Pets are wonderful. They cheer you up when you are down, keep you laughing, and love you no matter what. There is very little more heartwarming than seeing a child who has fallen asleep curled up next to a puppy.

Pets are a very common gift for children at holidays. Puppies and kittens at Christmas, baby ducks, chicks and bunnies at Easter and so forth. What child’s eyes wouldn’t light up at the sight of a brand new baby animal to hold and hug? The promises to love, feed and take care of the new additions to the family flow like water.

The critters are soft, warm and fuzzy gifts for certain but, and it’s a big but, they all grow up and in just a few short weeks are no longer cute little puppies but big romping barking dogs, the cuddly little kittens have turned into large aloof cats. The baby ducks and chicks are no longer soft and fuzzy, but big, noisy and messy, and those two bunnies, Fred and George turned out to be Fred and Georgia!

Pets are a long term commitment and buying a pet as a gift should be a well planned and thought out move not a spur of the moment decision based on emotional reaction.

If you are honestly thinking of getting someone a pet for the holidays (even if it is not for a child) be sure it is something you would do even if there were no holiday involved.

Make sure the gift fits. If the primary responsibility of caring for the animal is going to fall to a young child you don’t want to get a dog that will quickly grow to the size of a small pony which the child wouldn’t be capable of handling. You might also want to make sure you expose your child to other people’s pets for decent lengths of time before buying a pet, so if by chance they have allergic reactions to animals you will know before you bring one home for them to fall in love with. This will also give you the time to convince them that they would really prefer a turtle, lizard or something else that doesn’t have dander.

Keep in mind those animals, like babies, cost money way above and beyond the purchase price. Food, leashes, food, collars, food and water bowls, training supplies, food, toys, vet bills, food, licenses and tags, and more food!

There is a great deal of time that has to be invested in most any pet and the holidays are not always a good time to be doing that. The hustle and excitement of a houseful of friends and family may not be the ideal setting for a new puppy, kitten, or any other young animal. A better idea might be to cut out a picture of the pet you have in mind and put that in a card and make sure the child understands that as soon as the holidays have passed and things have gone back to a normal relaxed state they can help pick out the newest member of the family.

Earth Day is a holiday which falls in April of each year. Celebrations of Earth Day are held around the globe, and the day is dedicated towards educating people on the merits of recycling, and doing other things to help save this big blue marble we all live on and call earth.

There are many ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your children and spend the time teaching them about the environment. Here are some ideas to get you thinking on how you want to spend your Earth Day.

Every single person on earth, child or adult, can do their part for the environment. You can teach this to your children in very simple and easy to understand ways. From the day your child is able to turn off a light or television, teach them about wasting electricity and make it part of their normal daily routine to shut off the power when they are done with something such as a television or game. Also, teach them to always turn off lights when the leave a room. If you teach them this as very young children, then it won’t be such a battle when they get to be teenagers.

Other ways children can pitch in to help conserve electricity is through walking or riding their bike more, as well as helping to hang clothing on a line to dry.

In addition to saving electricity, your children can learn to save water by doing small things differently in their daily routines. Simple things like turning off the water while they brush their teeth or taking faster showers all help to save energy and conserve water.

A garden can be a wonderful way for a family to go green. You can compost your eggs shells and other organic waste products in your yard to keep them from ending up in a landfill. You can then use that compost as fertilizer for your garden soil. In addition to the exercise and interest that gardening provides, it also provides your children a chance to see how food is grown and used.

When you shop for food and other household products, explain to your children where they were made and where their packages end up. A simple trip to your local landfill will be a huge eye-opener for your children and really help them to go green a lot faster. There they can see the amazing amounts of waste even just one small town or community generates. Soon your children will be telling you to purchase things with less packaging.

If your child notices something in your own local town which is wasteful or harming the environment unnecessarily, ask them to write their local government official and let their voice be heard. Explain to your children that democracy is for both adults and children. This exercise is wonderful to help with writing skills, as well as to help build a sense of community in your child.

Finally, the absolute best way you can teach your child about nature and the environment is to spend time outdoors with your children. By getting your children interested in outdoor activities such as hiking, you can ensure that they will have a more healthy life and a better respect for the world in which we all live.

If you want to take your children to a park or on a hike, try letting them lead the way and show you what they find. Children are much lower down to the ground and can show you many things that you might not have otherwise noticed. If you will be spending time outside with your kids allow for a lot of extra time and for them to explore feely.

As you can clearly see, there are many ways in which you and your children can enjoy the earth we live on. There is much more to Earth Day each year than a reminder to recycle your cans and bottles – although that is always a good idea too.

Home for the holidays is an expression often used around the Christmas holiday season. It has been a long standing tradition to try to get home for the holidays and Christmas. For those who celebrate Christmas, it is a holiday that speaks so strongly to the sense of family belonging, family memories and times together. The Christmas holiday is a time for giving, not only presents, but time, love and energy. In these current days of hustle and bustle, many people don’t have much in the way of spare time, but around the Christmas holiday, people tend to make time.

Many people find the time to go out into the community to participate in fund raisers for charity. They donate money, shop for toys and clothes for needy children, help out in the various social service sites and generally reach out of their everyday routines to give back during the Christmas holiday season. For many children, this time of year is where they first witness and learn about charity. Some children receive it and others learn to contribute to it. And the Christmas holiday seems to have always included thinking about those of us who might not be as fortunate as we.

The Christmas holiday includes much more than family and charity because within these two arenas there is food, song and gratitude. Most people have fond memories of past Christmas holidays when Christmas eve meant new Christmas pajamas and Christmas morning was full of laughter and delicious smells coming from the kitchen and a full stocking in the living room. All the joy and love and festivities around the Christmas holiday filled hearts and money was not at the center of the importance of the holiday at all.

The most humble of homes were filled with warmth and Christmas holiday cheer. Children helped decorate with whatever was available, popcorn and cranberry strings for the tree or mantle, oranges stuck with cloves for the center of the table and baskets full of pine cones from the yard outside. And who can forget about placing the angel on the top of the Christmas tree in just the right way as the final touch to the Christmas holiday decorations? And just before bed, the all important plate with some snack for Santa, a Christmas holiday cookie and a cup of Eggnog was always a fine treat to leave. These are all some of the traditional decorations that children learn about during their early Christmas holidays. And hopefully, in this high tech world of ours, there are some of these wonderful old fashioned traditions still being shown to the children of today during the Christmas holiday season.

Mother’s day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day is a time to honor our mothers and all of the sacrifices they have made for us. In addition to the act of having given birth to us, our mothers generally have sacrificed many long nights when we were ill, and in many other ways in which we will likely never understand unless we become parents ourselves.

Here are the top ten gift ideas for Mother’s Day 2008:

Gift Idea #1 – One of the best Mother’s Day gifts you can give your mother is the gift of your time. Take time out to show your mother that you value her, and all that she has done for you, by volunteering to complete tasks for her that you know she doesn’t like to do. This could be cooking a meal, or even cleaning her home for her.

Gift Idea #2 – If your mother doesn’t take time out of her busy day to pamper herself, give her a gift of some luxury spa products which she can use at her leisure in the privacy of her own home.

Gift Idea #3 – Women generally do not buy perfume for themselves. While some do, many wait to have their favorite scent gifted to them. If you are unsure which your mom’s favorite scent is, a trip to her room can easily tell you. The bottle which is nearly empty is the best choice for you to purchase for her.

Gift Idea #4 – A mother’s ring made with the birthstones of each of her children is an excellent gift choice for Mother’s Day; this ring shows all that see it that your mother has children who love her. If your mother doesn’t wear rings, you can also get a mother’s pendant necklace which has the same effect.

Gift Idea #5 – Every woman loves to receive flowers. If your mother works outside the home, have them sent to her office so that everyone knows she is special to you. If your mother prefers plants to flowers, have the florist send a nice basket garden instead.

Gift Idea #6 – If your mother loves techie gadgets, and many these days do, a nice digital camera or cool new iPod could be just what she has been pining over. Mention new items on the market to her to get a feel for what she might enjoy having, but probably won’t spend the money on to purchase for herself.

Gift Idea #7 – Buy a tree or star in her name. Many charities today allow you to purchase things such as trees in a park, bricks for a new building, or even a star in the sky. By doing this you give your mother something which will last a lifetime and beyond – without adding clutter to her home.

Gift Idea #8 – Many mothers today simply want the gift of some time home alone. If you have younger siblings or a grandparent who your mother cares for, offer to take over for the day and allow her to spend the day off either hiding out somewhere at home or at a nearby location.

Gift #9 – Have your father and siblings gather together and take a nice photo for your mother. On Mother’s Day present it to her in a nice frame so that she can hang it on her wall. Mothers always enjoy looking at their family all together in one place. Even if everyone is grown and out of the house, this can make a very special gift.

Gift #10 – While giving a typical household appliance won’t be terribly appreciated by your mother, trust me on this one, a gift of a Dyson vacuum or a Kitchenaid mixer will be coveted. If the price is out of your range, you can ask your siblings to split the cost and then all deliver your mother an amazing gift come Mother’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday which celebrates Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick was one of the patron saints of Ireland credited with spreading the Catholic religion to many areas of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day takes place on the 17th day of March each year, which is the day which Saint Patrick died.

St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland with many businesses being closed on the day. In other parts of the world, especially the US and Canada, it is widely celebrated but is not an official government holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. Interestingly enough, occasionally the church authorities move the date of the holiday because of its clash with other holy days. In 2008 this is the case, and it shall be moved to March 15th to avoid Holy Monday.

Catholics around the world will start off their St. Patrick’s Day with a Mass service which is held to signify the holiday.

Here in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by everyone being of Irish decent for the day. The day has become more of a secular holiday than one of religion. Here in the United States St. Patrick’s Day has taken on more of a meaning of celebrating the beginning of spring. This goes along with the tradition of wearing green on the day, because green is both the color of Ireland as well as the color which signifies life and growth. It is said that you will be lucky for the coming Spring if you wear green on the holiday.

Amazingly, St. Patrick’s Day began being celebrated here in the United States with a parade in Queens New York in 1737, well before the Revolutionary War. Since that day, parades are a very popular way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Many people wear a shamrock on the holiday to signify good luck. However, the roots of this tradition, it is said, come from St. Patrick using a shamrock to explain to the pagans the concept of the Holy Trinity. In the Catholic Religion, the Holy Trinity is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, which Christians know all stem from the same God. The three leaves of the shamrock all connected to the same stem were used to explain this concept to the pagans. If you are wearing a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day, it means that you can claim good luck or blessings on that day and for the rest of the year.

In addition to the shamrock, many people believe that the cute little fictitious Leprechaun character can bring you good luck. For this reason many people wear Leprechaun pins and other memorabilia on St. Patrick’s Day as well as a shamrock.

One of the fun and very popular traditions which goes along with St. Patrick’s Day is the consumption of green ale. Many bars and pubs add green food coloring to their beer on the holiday to serve to their customers. In addition to the green ale, many people also indulge in Irish Cream and Irish Whisky on the day as well. For the kids, a nice green lemonade or 7UP make great non-alcoholic alternatives.

Ever do a gift exchange with your family? How about Secret Santa with your co-workers? Or even watched in anticipation at a friends or child’s birthday party? The excitement builds and everyone can’t wait to see what unique holiday gift ideas the rest have gotten, and you just know that this year is going to be different. Finally the time to open the gifts has arrived, and you watch as all the gifts are opened and to everyone’s disappointment, the presents are the same old ones from last year, and the year before, and even before that one.

It appears that there is no uniqueness to anyone’s gifts anymore. Ties, socks, even underwear has become second nature to some gift-givers. To others, you receive watches, earrings and other jewelry, and even kitchen utensils. And for those who were in a hurry and could not make up their mind, a simple card that said they thought of you on this special day.

So this year you want to be different. You swear that the person who receives your next gift will not have to suffer with a boring gift that took very little thought to purchase. You sit down and start to brainstorm what unique holiday gift ideas you can come up with to really surprise the entirety of the celebration party.

To start with, there is your female co-worker, Jane. What unique holiday gift idea can you come up with for the woman who loves gardening and especially loves to receive roses? Well, to start, a glass crystal rose would be a perfect compliment to her cubicle’s décor, or even her own windowsill at home. Yet another unique holiday gift idea would be a Chia-plant herb garden. This way she can show off her green thumb, while also using fresh herbs in her cooking.

Next comes Ted, your boss. He always appears to be in a bad mood and very rarely smiles. Ted is always given ties and accessories for the ties he receives, and every year he takes the gifts cordially but never wears the ties he’s been given. This year, as a unique holiday gift idea, you decide you’re going to give Ted something he can really use and be proud to display. You notice that he always has a cell phone, the new PDA he just acquired, and his iPod that he loves to use to unwind during slow times of the business. So you decide a multiple electronic charging station is just the unique holiday gift idea you’ve been looking for.

So, you’ve taken care of the office, but what about your spouse? What unique holiday gift idea can you give your wife or husband. You scramble to think of the best, most unique gift for your spouse when it comes to you like a brilliant spark. For those of us who have wives, the perfect unique holiday gift idea is a digital picture frame that can show multiple family photos all in one location. However, for those of us who have husbands, a wonderful idea is a portable propane grill that attaches to the hitch of the truck for true tailgating occasions. Both spouses will love showing these items off, as well as using them quite often.

Finally, you have the grandparents. They brought you into this world and reared you up right. A unique holiday gift idea for them is only natural to want. So with a lot of love an consideration, you figure a nice new pair of slippers that have a pair a bright lights built into them would make walking to the bathroom at night, or even to the kitchen for a late snack, much more safe for them.

You sit back and think how you are going to be the envy of all due to your creative genius and the creative holiday gift ideas you were able to give.

If you have school-aged children, then you have some very important people to thank come Christmas time. The bus driver gets your children safely to and from school each day, regardless of the weather and other irritations. And, your child’s teacher is tasked with helping them learn to grow intellectually while at the same time generally does the work for a small amount of pay and appreciation.

In order for you to show your appreciation to your child’s bus driver and teacher this Christmas, here are some ideas to help you think of the perfect gift:

Christmas Gift Suggestion #1 – Teacher appreciation gifts should be for the teacher themselves and not so much a gift for the classroom. If your secretary has done a great job this year, you don’t reward her with a new office computer; you give her a bonus which she can spend on herself. The same idea goes for teachers and other service personnel as well. However, the one caveat to that are items which the school will never pay for and the teacher will end up purchasing out of their own pocket money.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #2 – One of the absolute best gifts that you can give to a teacher or bus driver does not have to cost a dime. What is it? The gift of a hand-written note from your child thanking them for what they have offered your child.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #3 – Many teachers start their day with a quick joke. A nice clean joke book, appropriate for the age of the kids, can make a great gift for a teacher. They can use this for a laugh, and they can also use it in their classroom as well.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #4 – Teachers always need board games to play in class, and even to enjoy at home with their own children. You can very easily choose a good quality game and then let the teacher decide on where she would like to use it.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #5 – Food items always make good gifts. However, you do not need to send in cookies or cakes to feel appreciation from teachers or bus drivers. Try buying their lunch or dinner by giving a gift card to your local restaurant or deli. Or, you can even give a simple gift card to a local grocery store.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #6 – Teachers love books. While books are always a welcomed gift, you can either choose one yourself or you can leave it up to the teacher by buying them a gift card for a book store such as Barnes & Noble which also gives them a discount on their purchases.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #7 – A low maintenance plant is always a good gift option. Try to stick to something easy to grow without too many requirements so they can be grown at school or at home. One of my personal favorites are cactus gardens and Christmas cactus flowering plants.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #8 – If the teacher or bus driver supports a cause make a donation in their name and give them a card with a note that you have done this.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #9 – If you have a talent that you can teach others how to do, why not offer to teach the class something interesting for the teacher. This gives them a break and helps them to plan a fun lesson at the same time.

Christmas Gift Suggestion #10 – Last but certainly not least, do not buy a teacher something with “#1 Teacher” or an apple on it. It is plain tacky and teachers generally have a ton of that stuff. Instead stick to something consumable if you have to send in something like a coffee mug. Replace that mug with some gourmet coffee or tea and the teacher will appreciate it!

Today almost every child knows why Columbus Day is celebrated and what Columbus Day holiday traditions are. It was on the 3rd of August 1492 that Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailor, accompanied by 90 courageous men set sail westwards to discover a sea route to India and the rest of spice rich Asia. For two long months, the hardy sailors fought scurvy and storms till finally, on the night of 11th October Columbus saw a light ahead.

What followed is history and is known to every child who has studied history. As decided by the Queen Isabella, Queen of Spain who had financed the venture, the new lands discovered were claimed for Spain and Columbus received the title of “Admiral of all Ocean Seas”. He was given 10% of all the riches that were obtained. Needless to say, Columbus became a very rich man.

The Celebrations Begin

For hundreds of years, America did not celebrate Columbus Day. However, if we trace history of holiday traditions, in 1792 a ceremony was held in New York and a monument was dedicated to Columbus. The District of Columbia was named after him and in 1892, a statue of Columbus was erected at what is now the Columbus Avenue and replicas of Columbus’ ships were displayed.

Columbus Day began in earnest when Italians living in New York organized large parades on 12th of October 1866. Every year, larger numbers of Italians in the United States celebrated Columbus Day. In 1892, Columbus Day received official sanction of some sort when President Benjamin Harrison called upon people to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery. However, the day was still not declared a federal holiday yet.

Official Sanction

Only in 1905, was Columbus Day celebrated officially by a State. It was Colorado that observed the day first. Soon other States followed and in 1937, President Franklin D Roosevelt declared 12th October as Columbus Day. In 1971, the date was altered marginally to be the second Monday of every October and so it has been since then. Most federal offices, banks and post offices observe the holiday but markets, schools and private establishments do not. There are still a few states that do not observe the day and do not follow associated holiday traditions.

Many Native Americans are opposed to Columbus Day and its holiday traditions. They point to the fact that as a result of these discoveries, the natives were subjected to great suffering and nearly vanished. Natives also suffered greatly due to new diseases introduced to the continent, scrounges such as small pox wiped out entire settlements. People who are opposed to celebrating Columbus Day observe the day as the International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People. In fact, the opposition is slowly increasing as is evident from the National Council of Churches in the United States asking people to refrain from celebrating.

While the celebrations may be seeing some controversy, there can be no denying the courage and skill displayed by Columbus and his sailors. Columbus Day can therefore be taken as a celebration of Courage and Hope besides the discovery of a new Continent.

Holiday decorations add a certain element of festivity to any space. Whether it is at work or at home or at school, holiday decorations lend an air of welcome and hospitality and usually lift everyone’s spirits. Holiday decorations can be simple or elaborate, hand made or store bought, homey or high tech, but they are always festive. There are some holidays where the decorations are most of what the holiday is about. Take Halloween, for example. Yes there are costumes and holiday food, but they are actually incorporated into the Halloween decorations and are a big part of the fun and atmosphere involved in the holiday. Especially if there are Holiday parties planned. Holidays like Halloween can be centered around and decorated around a theme such as the traditional haunted house or literature or periods in history and the decorations will follow the theme and so will the costumes.

Holiday decorations are sometimes very traditional and leave little room for creativity. Religious holidays, for example, have very little in the way of options in terms of decorations. Take for instance, Chanukah. Menorahs are Menorahs. They may vary in style, but they are still Menorahs. The Star of DAvid is another example. It may vary in size, color and material, but the shape is always the same. So these are very important constant elements included in the holiday decorations for Chanukah. Holiday decorations for Christian holidays have some equivalent aspects to them. There are things like Christmas Ornaments that are hand Carved from Olive Wood in the Holy Land. They might represent images of the Manger Scene or Mother and Child with the guiding Star. The actual decoration itself can vary, but the subject depicted in the decorations don’t. There are certain national holiday decorations that never change. The flag for Flag Day is a good example.

For fun and highlight, holiday decorations can simply be all glitter and sparkles. Or your holiday decorations can be juvenile. They can incorporate cartoon or storybook characters. They can be part of a famous fashion doll line. They can be seasonal and natural items from the great outdoors, like Christmas trees, wreaths and garlands, pumpkins, lilies or poinsettias. Your holiday decorations can be certain foods, like decorated eggs, specially shaped cookies and specific colors of candy. And even if you do not recognize, observe or celebrate certain holidays, you will usually we aware of and familiar with the customary decorations that are associated with most common holidays.

In the attempt to be politically correct and sensitive to different cultures, there is huge debate going on about the display of certain holiday decorations associated with religious holidays. Although the decoration itself may not be offensive, the fact that it is associated with a holiday that may be exclusive and can be oppressive it has become important to consider holiday decorations in certain settings as not being appropriate or permitted. But at this point, in many places in the world, individuals are free to decorate for the holidays according to their own wishes in the privacy of their own homes.
