Taking your pets with you when you travel by air is something that many people do not consider. Most people either think it is not possible, or that it is simply not worth the trouble. Others believe that their pet may not be safe on the airplane and therefore choose to leave them at home whilst they go on vacation.

In reality, pet air travel is very accessible and most airlines will accommodate the needs of your pet. You no longer need to pay someone to come and feed your dogs while you are on vacation – simply take them with you instead! Your pets will not mind the air travel, and they will of course immensely enjoy their vacation with you.

When you are organizing your pet air travel, the first thing you should do is get a good check up at the vet. The pet should be given a clear bill of health so that he will not have any complications when flying. A healthy pet will not have any problems up in the air.

You may need to show a health certificate when you book your pet air travel, so make sure you receive one of these from your vet.

Your pet should of course be equipped with a good quality collar which houses an ID tag containing the pet’s name, your name and phone number. You should also include your destination on the collar.

The next step is to buy a travel crate. Attempt to get a high quality one. They may cost a little more than the cheap ones, however you only want the best for your pet and you certainly do not want a crate that is going to open itself. A nice study hard plastic crate with a metal type door that locks in is ideal for your pet to travel by air. The words “Live Animal” should be written in large letters around the crate both on the sides and on the top.

You might also choose to attach a photo of your pet on the crate in a plastic covering. This is good for identification purposes.

Your animal will be able to feed if you attach a small container of food. The airline staff will give him food and water if required.

As you can see, pet air travel is not as complicated as people may think it is.

Now you have that all out of the way, it is time to start enjoying your vacation with your pet!

Pet travel carriers are vital if you want to take your pet on an airplane trip with you. However they come in handy for other travel purposes as well. Some pets, cats in particular, will require a pet travel carrier if they are to pay a visit to the vet. It is much easier to travel with your cat in the car if he is in a crate of some sort, rather than just loose in the car. A loose cat can cause dangerous distraction to the driver.

Then there are the small ‘toy’ dogs. These sorts of dogs are able to be carried in regular bags. They are even making bags these days which look just like handbags, but are actually small dog carriers! Perhaps Paris Hilton started this trend, but it certainly is a nifty way to carry your little pet around in comfortable and stylish fashion.

The traditional type of pet travel carrier is the hard plastic crate with swinging door that should latch in and stay very secure. The more you spend generally the higher quality pet travel carrier you will get.

As a responsible pet owner, you will want to ensure your pet is afforded the greatest comfort and security when traveling. The worst thing that could ever happen is that your pet falls out of or escapes from its pet travel carrier when you are not around. What a nightmare! For this reason, you should pay close attention to the type of pet travel carrier you are purchasing.

The Veri-Kennel line of travel crates for cats and dogs are ideal for air travel and are actually approved by airlines. These are extremely sturdy with heavy duty plastic shells and wire doors. They come in a variety of sizes and will suit most pets.

Then there are cat carriers which are made solely for cats. These are known by several names, most notable the pet or cat taxi. These carriers can be used to transport your cat everywhere. The cat taxis are available in a wide variety of materials and sizes.

In general when you are choosing a pet travel carrier you should look out for the material it is made from, the durability, how easy it is to clean, ease of use, airline compliance, weight, safety, comfort, size and guarantee/warranty.

Keep these simple aspects in mind when buying a pet travel carrier and your pet will end up with the very best carrier to suit it.

International pet travel need not be an ordeal for your pet. How many times have you traveled to another country and pondered whether or not to take your pet? Perhaps you really really wanted to take him, but figured it would be all too complicated, not to mention unsafe for your beloved animal.

Well it does not have to be either unsafe or complicated. It is actually quite simple to travel international with your pet. They can be ultra safe and comfortable as well. Perhaps even more comfortable than you in your cramped airplane seat!

Tip 1 – Identification

Your animal must have an ID tag. No two ways about it! I think it goes without saying anyway, but I have to mention it as the first international pet travel tip because it is easy to forget this when you are in the hustle and bustle of packing for your vacation. A collar is fine, and you should also tag your pet’s travel crate and any other items he has.

Tip 2 – Things to take with you

I know how hard it is to remember everything to take with you on vacation, so try to make a list of everything your pet will need. Of course, you can pick up additional supplies later (Unless you are traveling to a deserted island!).

You definitely need the aforementioned ID tags. Also think of warm clothing if you are that way inclined with your pets. Food is a given. Water for long road trips. Toys for cats and perhaps a ball for the dog if you decide to stop on the way.

Really just take along anything that will make your pet feel at home when he is undertaking international pet travel.

Tip 3 – Safety and comfort in the air and car

If you are driving, your car must be safe for your pet. Ideally a section of the car should be cordoned off for the animal. If this is not possible, then ensure the pet is not going to obstruct the driver, particularly dogs. Cats can be kept in their crate. It is ideal to have a large crate for your cat so he can walk around in it.

International pet travel is a joyous experience for you as you do not have to worry about your pet being stuck at home. It is also so exciting to take your pet on holiday, particularly to tropical beach destinations where your dog will absolutely love the water and sunshine.

When deciding whether or not to take your pet on vacation with you, there are several factors you must consider first.

For example, you pets age. Is he too old to travel? Some older pets simply can not handle the stress of traveling, particularly on long journeys or by plane. If this is case, please do not take your pet with you.

Once you have decided to travel with your pet, there are many pet travel tips which can assist you in making sure the ride is as smooth as possible for both you and your pet. You should of course ensure your pet is healthy enough to travel. Consider a thorough vet check up within a week or two of leaving. Your vet will be able to tell you if your pet is fit enough to go on vacation with you.

Even if you are only traveling in the car with your pet, it is always wise to attach a collar to the pet containing his name and your name, as well as your phone number and address. A pet can run off at any time while our backs are turned, and this is the safest assurance that you will get him back. Your pet should already be microchipped. This provides a good way to link a lost pet to you. This is a vital pet travel tip so please adhere to it!

The next pet travel tip relates to carrier crates and bags. There is a more detailed article on pet travel carriers on this site, however I will mention the briefly here too as they really are vital to your pets traveling needs.

The carrier or crate should be of adequate size. Most dogs will not enjoy a crate in the car, but cats should be confined to a cage whilst journeying in the car.

Of course, a crate is required if you are traveling by plane. Always buy airline approved crates of the highest quality.

Other pet travel tips include small but important things such as grooming your animal before you go away. Like you, he would love to look and feel his best before setting off on holidays so do him a favor and treat him to a pamper and claw clipping before you set off! A clean and groomed animal is a happy animal. There is nothing worse than having your animal constantly scratching and being flea riddled whilst you are on vacation.

Ensure you take plenty of cold water with you as well as dried food for the journey. Depending how long the journey is, you may need to take more substantial food for your pet. This can be kept cold in esky’s and other refrigeration devices.

These are just a few simple pet travel tips which will make yours and your pets vacation an enjoyable one!

When traveling, we very rarely forget to purchase travel insurance for ourselves. But what about your pets? Do they need to be insured?

Well the simple answer is yes, they certainly do!

If you are traveling with your pet, wouldn’t it give you peace of mind knowing they also have travel insurance?

Pet travel insurance will protect your against high vet fees if your pet happens to need a vet whilst on vacation. Vet fees can be outrageous at the best of times and like doctor fees, they will often charge more if you are not from the area or even worse, overseas.

Some well respected pet travel insurance companies include RSCPA, Direct Line, Petplan, More Than, Tesco and Marks & Spencer. You are even able to get online quotes as you do with your home and car insurance. It really could not be easier.

Your pet will be ensured against illness or injury. The extent of each policy depends on the company and which policy you choose, however these are the basic things that are covered by pet travel insurance.

Typically you will be able to claim for prescriptions, x-rays, tests, injections and general vet costs. This could be a tremendous load off your back as these expenses often run into the thousands of dollars if you are uninsured.

As with regular insurance, pet travel insurance will incur an excess cost. Shop around to find the best insurer for your needs but don’t always pick the one with the lowest excess as it could mean they do not provide the coverage of other policies.

The good news is that pet insurance costs nowhere near as much as human insurance! There really is no reason to overlook pet travel insurance when traveling with your beloved pet.
