What are holidays without holiday traditions? Holidays in the US are no exception, especially the three major holidays, namely Christmas, New Years and Easter Sunday that are celebrated with great passion. Apart from these, there are eight holidays unique to America that include Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
Easter
Easter Sunday is celebrated as a religious festival that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Families get together. The holiday tradition here is making Easter Eggs – colorful hard-boiled eggs and distributing candy to kids. On Easter Monday the US President hosts an egg hunt on the White House lawn for kids.
New Year’s Day
This marks the end of the holiday season in the US and is celebrated on January 1. On December 31, New Year Eve parties are held to herald in the New Year.
Thanksgiving
This is a unique festival for Americans and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Here the holiday tradition is to take the long weekend off and visit family and friends. During Thanksgiving dinner, the specialty is roast turkey, potatoes, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Families offer their thanks to appreciate everything.
Memorial Day
The fourth Monday in May marks the celebration of honoring those who died in the Civil War. This holiday tradition is in the form of special events in cemeteries, public places and churches.
Labor Day
This holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in September to pay tribute to the working people. Typically the holiday tradition here is parades.
Veterans Day
To respect the Americans who fought in World War II, Veterans Day or Armistice Day is celebrated on November 11. The Veterans organizations carry out this holiday tradition in the form of parades with the President placing a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns at the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
The biggest holiday of them all is of course Christmas to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. People follow the holiday tradition of exchanging holiday cards and gifts with their loved ones and family. Most people have Christmas trees in their homes, decorated merrily to celebrate this festival.
Christmas alone is celebrated with different holiday tradition across the US depending on where you live as people follow the customs that have been handed down over the generations. Of course, there are many holiday traditions that come about as a result of other ethnic groups that have settled in the US – like Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Valentines Day and Halloween are celebrated both in the US and in other parts of the world.
