One of the tourist spots you can visit in Los Angeles is the famous La Brea Tar Pits, which are collection of tar pits. It is located in the affluent and historic urban neighborhood of Hancock Park.
This accessible and famous paleontological site was created from asphalt or tar that has infiltrated from the ground for thousands of years. As a result, hundreds of sticky pools of tar were formed. Of the hundred pits in the park, Pit 91 is the most famous because it is visited by tourists every summer. One of the exhibits of the site is the regular excavation of the site for fossils that last for two months.
For years, a rich collection of fossils have been unearth from these tar pits. Some of these fossils are from prehistoric mammals, insects and plants. With the discoveries of these fossils and microfossils, it gives a picture of what the Los Angeles basin looks like during the glacial age, which is a cooler and moister environment that maintains a rich collection of flora and fauna.
If you want to see these fossils, you can visit the George C. Page Museum, which is located also in Hancock Park. This museum is considered as a part of Los Angeles County’s Natural History Museum.
A walk with the stars
One of the visited neighborhoods in Los Angeles is the Hollywood district, which is located west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles.
The term Hollywood is frequently used as a metonym of movies and cinemas of the United States. It is due to its reputation and cultural characteristics as the historical center of motion picture studios and movie stars.
You can visit historic theaters, which is the venue for many premiere theatrical releases and host to the star studded Academy Awards. And this is also the home of the celebrated Hollywood Walk of Fame.
While you’re in the district, you can also have a look at the well-known Hollywood Sign, which is located on Mount Lee’s southern side in Griffith Park, which is at the Hollywood Hills area. It is a famous landmark that spells out the Hollywood name in 50 feet high white letters.
You can view the sign from either the ground, which reveals the sign in its wavy appearance, or at a comparable altitude that causes the letters to appear straight.
A walk in the park
You can also visit a famous park known to have a small lake that contains the biggest planting of lotuses outside the Asian continent. It is called as the Echo Park, which is located northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The park offers a lot of recreational activities, from bathhouses to fishing opportunities.
