When it comes to festivities, nobody does it better than the Brazilians. With a lot of major festive activities, such as the Carnival, you will see that Brazilians also consider the New Year as a major event that should be celebrated in style. If you love a good party, then Rio de Janeiro is a prime New Year’s Destination this coming 2009.

Even before the stroke of midnight, you will see thousands and thousands of people gathering around the beaches in Copacabana awaiting the countdown and the party. The party here is so wild that it attracts not only Brazilians but also people from all over the world to join in on the festivities.

Basically, the New Year festivities are concentrated on Copacabana. Every year, an estimated number of more than 2 million people attends the countdown and it is expected that more people will come this coming 2009. There are four stages along the beach complete with live music shows with the hottest local and international artists.

The music shows will usually start at 8PM that features traditional Carnival songs to rock music and even dance music. Whatever music you prefer, you can be sure that you will have a great time partying with the Brazilians and with people from all over the world.

At midnight, the fireworks festival starts to celebrate the New Year. The fireworks stations are located in boats that are anchored in a very safe distance from the people in the beach and the show usually lasts between 15 to 20 minutes. Also, there are two fireworks cascade highlights at Le Meridien Hotel and at the Forte de Copacabana.

The great thing about celebrating the New Year at Copacabana beach is that it provides a great vantage point to view the fireworks display wherever you are at the beach. Also, you can drink liquor in the premises.

So, if you plan on coming to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the 2009 New Year, you may want to know about some of the few traditions. First, you need to remember that all people here wear white for the party. You can add some of your favorite accessories but the main point is to wear white. Black is not the right color to wear unless you want to be booed by the entire throng of partying Brazilians in the area.

Also, people bring flowers and throw them to the sea just before midnight. This is an offering to Yemanja, who is the deity of the seas. If you are with your friends, then bringing a bottle of champagne is definitely a must. At the stroke of midnight, you can pop the cork and spray it around and no one will ever complain about it. In fact, the people you sprayed may even thank you for it as it is considered to be good luck.

This is a party where everyone is welcome. No matter which country you come from, you will see that everybody will be able to participate in the Rio de Janeiro New Year eve\s party. From working class people, to socialites, to transvestites, to homosexuals, to children, to seniors, to couples, to teenagers, everyone is invited to join in on the fun.

    I’ve visited Rio de Janeiro last year pronounced Hee-oo dee Zhan-ay-roo btw, and I can attest going up Sugar Loaf to see the city at sunset was breathtaking and probably my favourite of the trip.
