An Intro to Mountaineering

Mountaineering is considered a sport, a profession or hobby of hiking, walking, climbing and trekking up mountains. In Europe, it is called as alpinism. It started as an all-out challenge to reach the highest point of unclimbed mountains, but today it has branched into different aspects such as the snow-craft, skiing and rock-craft, depending on whether the path chosen is over snow, ice or rock. This sport requires technical ability, great athletic prowess and a lot of experience.

The Mountaineers view

There are things to consider if you want to become a well-handled and good mountaineer. One should be physically, socially, mentally and/or spiritually healthy; posses a well-mannered posture; physically prepared; able to adapt and be aware with the environment; has educated enough on mountaineering guide and has experience. It is really important to be cautious and be prepared in doing mountain climbing because safety is the utmost concern

Techniques to consider

While climbing on snow driven mountains, mountaineers can progress by climbing on foot but with the aid of some mechanical devices in order to traverse over the snow and ice more easily.

Crampons are attached to a mountaineer’s boots. It has 10-12 spikes that are used to provide traction when going through hard snow and allow the mountaineers to ascend and descend from steep parts. Snowshoes are used when traversing on lesser slopes up the mountain or through deep snow. Skis are used in steeper and more alpine landscapes. It requires practice to develop sufficiently strong skiing skills for complicated terrain.

Crevasses pose a grave danger when traveling over glaciers.

These are giant cracks in the ice that are not always visible to climbers as the snow can be blown and freeze over the top of these crevasses to make a snow bridge. But as time passes by, these snow bridges became very thin as a few inches. Ropes are used by climbers to protect themselves from such hazards. Teamwork is very vital in a glacier climb. Teams of two to four climbers tie into a rope with equal space. In cases a fall occur to one climber, the other members of the team stop the fall by performing a self-arrest and pull the climber from the crevasse.

There are a lot of methods used to have a safely travel over ice. If the terrain is not vertical but steep, then you can protect yourself by using ice screws or pickets. It is driven into the ice or snow and attached to the rope by the lead climber. Climbers on the team then clip past the anchor, while last climber picks it up. If it is a vertical terrain then standard ice climbing maneuvers are used.
