Summer is fast approaching and yet you’re still wondering on what fun and exciting recreational activity you will be doing. Some prefers to stay at home wondering on how to cope up with boredom while majority of vacationers travel to different localities and tourists attraction. But still, others engage in sports to improve their physical prowess, develop techniques and simply to have fun. Indeed, people act and react differently from each other.
One great recreational activity you can engage yourself this summer is through fishing. I’m talking about recreational or sport fishing, which is in contrast with commercial fishing that is fishing for profit. You can fish from ponds and lakes, which are close to the land or do offshore or open sea fishing. The choice is yours to make.
What’s with Sport Fishing?
Sport fishing or Recreational fishing is simply fishing for competition or for pleasure. The primary reward of this sport is the challenge of finding a fish and catching them instead of the financial and culinary value of the fish’s flesh. However, their distinction is not totally inflexible because in some cases sport fishers will also eat the fish they catch. But to distinctively clear things up, the tactics and philosophies of sport fishing is sufficiently far different from food fishing.
Recreational fishing consists of rules, licensing restrictions, conventions and laws on how fishes are to be caught. Catching fishes with hooks not in the mouth and the use of nets are strictly prohibited.
From common to the extreme
The most common form of sport fishing is with the use of a rod, line, hooks, reel and baits, which comes in a variety of selection. Other devices used are lures and terminal tackle such as floats, swivels and weights.
A lot of fishing tackles are made by professional manufacturing company but hobbyists find it more satisfying to use fishing tackles that are made by them. Artificial flies and plastic lures are some of its example.
Another common form is angling, wherein a sport fisher attempts to catch a fish using a hook. The difference with angling is that it is expected for the person to return the fish he had caught. It is usually called as the catch and release practice, a technique intended for conservation
A unique practice of sport fishing is noodling. It is specifically done for catching catfish but only using one’s bare hand. It is called in many terms such as grabbling, tickling, graveling, stumping, catfisting, dogging and hogging. In the United States, five states have laws allowing the practice of Noodling. These five states are Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kansas and Louisiana.
Trout tickling, on the other hand, is the practice of rubbing the trout’s underbelly using the fingers. If done correctly, the trout will be put in a trance and can be easily thrown to the nearest dry land.
But the most fascinating and extreme of all sport fishing is the big-game or the offshore sport fishing. It targets large bony fish like marlin, sailfish, tuna and sharks. And it is usually with the use of a boat in the open sea, which is away from dry land. This is usually done for recreational purpose but presently competitions are conducted.
Offshore sport fishing is conducted in various places in the world. Some of the famous places to practice this recreational activity are off the coast of Hawaii, California, Florida, North Carolina, through the Caribbean, near Mexico, the eastern coastline of Australia and in South America. Some of the fishes are caught along the continental shelf, thus knowing the distance where the boat operates is an important aspect.
Now that you have been oriented on the different ways to do sport fishing, get your rods or boats ready and have a quality time catching your first ever fish.
